Something about Sanlitun

When Sanlitun South was razed last year for redevelopment – incidentally, nary a single foundation has been laid on that plot of land where two-meter high weeds now stand guard – some thought the area drinking scene had taken a mortal blow. Instead, it turned out to be the one step backward that precedes the two steps forward in the creative destruction process, and Sanlitun has emerged stronger and more diverse than ever. True, that main northern strip features too many sub-par copycat bars and all of the associated promoters, beggars, fake CD sellers and lady bar touts that come with it. And there have been some disturbing reports of bouncer behavior. But there are also numerous bar and restaurant investors targeting new niche markets , offering more choice and raising service standards, particularly along the new south street and near Tongli Studio in the northwest. Whether it's Browns, The Bookworm, Alameda, The Tree, Q Bar or others, Sanlitun offers some “ best of the best ” in the city. Here are ten highlights, from its far north to its deep south:

1. The Tree — Arguably the best pizza in town, nicely washed down with Belgian beer .

2. Cheers — A simple and unpretentious bar with an excellent happy hour (10-kuai Qingdao drafts before 10 PM) and live Xinjiang music .

3. Top Club / Bar Blu — Comfy rooftop decks up top and dance floors down below.

4. Le Petit Gourmand — Kick back, have a beer and read a few books .

5. Alameda — A Brazilian barbecue joint picked by that's Beijing and City Weekend readers as the city's best restaurant.

6. The Bookworm — Kick back again, this time glass of wine in hand, and read some more books in the high-ceilinged downstairs or on the rooftop garden .

7. Browns — Good pub grub , good draft beer selection, good place to lose your inhibitions and do some bar top dancing .

8. Modern Nomads — Enjoy throat singing while sipping the best (er, only) Chingis martinis in town.

9. Beer Mania — An excellent combination of mostly Belgian beers and quality cocktails (Mojito, Long Island) in a laid-back atmosphere.

10. Q Bar — The most consistent high-quality cocktails in town and a spacious deck to boot.

Throw in other northern spots such as Saddle (good burritos), Apertivo (good people watching) and Jazz-Ya (good Long Islands), southern ones such as Salsa Caribe , Banana Leaf and Phil's Pub (good 10-kuai Gin Tonics), nearby establishments such as The Pavillion , Alfa and Yugong Yishan , and more clubs than you can shake a stick at on Gongti west and north, and Sanlitun not only did not take a mortal blow last year, but is living proof of the saying, “Whatever doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.”

that's Beijing announces its annual bars and clubs awards tonight. Below, in capital letters, are the places I think deserve to win (all in my extremely humble opinion, of course).

Hotel Bar

I usually frequent hotel bars for work-related reasons and have to give Centro credit: there is always a decent number of people , usually decent martinis and sometimes decent live jazz . In terms of slickness, it's about as dependable as Beijing bars get. Expect this category to be much more crowded next year with new bars in the Crowne Plaza, Hilton and other hotels competing against older ones such as Centro, Hyatt’s Redmoon and Shangri La’s Cloud Nine .

Bar Snacks

Saddle (burritos) and Fish Nation (our fine-finned friend with chips) both offer good filler in Sanlitun north, Bellagio has the Taiwanese angle covered, Cafe Pause , while technically not a bar, has tasty snacks up in the 798 Art District, and there are innumerable kebab stands where night owls may bulk up on meat and fat, not to mention a week's worth of salt. Decent eats these are all, but I'm giving a slight edge to two places: Mojito , which despite it's somewhat car-park like feel offers up the super tasty Mexican hamburger, and The Den , which pumps out the pizza and deep-fried goodies 24/7.

I also remember tasty cocktails at Alfa , Jazz Ya , Browns (hit and miss), 5:19 , The Big Easy , and places too numerous to mention. But in the end, only one place consistently pumps out a wide range of high-quality drinks, and thus the award goes to George Zhou and Echo Sun at Q Bar .

Bar of the Year

This bar has raised its beer prices, lost key staff, struggled with its interior decorating, dealt with DJ turmoil, faced numerous other challenges and, despite it all, had a greater impact on Beijing's drinking scene than any other establishment in the past year. This bar has exerted influence because it consistently provides good clean fun, because it scores well in terms of design, atmosphere, food and beer selection, and because it is frequented by a sizeable number of the city's bar owners, managers and employees. Love it or hate it, this bar has firmly planted itself in the party landscape, providing not only great value for patrons, but also food for thought for those in the industry, and this combination should earn it the bar of the year award. The only drawbacks: the toilets are, in fact, a bit gross, and by the time the final game ends, the sun is up and it's hard to see the screens. The entry fee is 30 kuai and includes one beer. An added benefit is that you can pop over to Stone Boat in the late evening for some great live music.

RITAN PARK CENTRAL COMPOUND

Ghana vs. Czech; Italy vs. US : What a great place to witness the fastest-paced and arguably most exciting game so far, as Ghana won its first World Cup match by knocking off the highly ranked Czech team, 2-0. They now need to beat the US, which put up a ferocious battle against Italy, and benefited greatly from that country's own goal. Three red cards, a bloodied face, and a futile Italian corner kick in each of the final five minutes. Great games, great location, great fun.

BROWNS

Japan vs. Croatia : Browns is simply a fun place to watch the game, given its good beer selection, tasty food and good layout. This is one place that does not have to be full to have a lot of energy in the air. The big group of Japanese fans beside me had a great time, although I think some of them had ulcers after that tight game, and as they headed out, the Brazilians flowed in, as Browns is apparently their World Cup home base (witness the huge flag on the east wall). This place is probably your best bet if you're looking for a crowd .

BEER MANIA

Brazil vs. Australia : It was on the way home! There were more people sitting out in front (five) than inside watching the game (three), with Chinese commentary, but who cares when you are watching a valiant effort by Australia and sipping a Caipirinha made by manager Marc .

JOHN BULL PUB

Mexico vs. Portugal : What a difference a quesadilla makes! John Bull Pub has been serving up authentic Mexican food on Fridays and Saturdays and did it again for this Wednesday night game. The result: tasty food and lots of people. Good time all around.

Richard Millar , the ex-Aria chef who was working at Pavillion , has moved to T-8 in Shanghai. / Torres has launched its website at www.torreschina.com. / ASC Fine Wines will hold a brunch on June 25 with guest chef George Calombaris (550 kuai) and a five-course dinner on June 27 with chef Andrew McKee (1188 kuai). Both events are at Aria and feature Penfolds wine and winemaker Oliver Crawford . / Summergate will hold a tasting of Georges Duboeuf wine at new French restaurant Le Parfum on June 27 (7-10 PM), with Zhu Yi-bing playing cello (100 kuai). / Beer Mania has Delirium Tremors on tap (40 kuai for 500 ML, regular 55 kuai) during happy hour, 4-8 PM (including weekends). I teamed up with Stellar-Go , Kemba and P-Linny last Friday night for a tour of some Sanlitun bars. We started at a familiar spot – The Tree – which is among the few places without a Happy Hour, though bottles of one brand of Belgian beer are only 25 kuai before 7 PM. Our goal at this point was to wolf down some of The Tree's pizza, which was just picked as the city's best in the recent that's Beijing's restaurant awards. My pick of our three: the four-cheese pie.

Next stop was Cheers , on the second floor of Tongli Studios, which houses Bar Blu , Top Club and Le Petit Gourmand . Cheers has a limited drinks menu, but makes up for it by offering two-for-one until 10 PM, which translates into 10-kuai Qingdao pints and 15-kuai Jim Beam, Jameson and Wild Turkey shots (we stuck to this latter trio). Cheers is a bar, plain and simple, with mostly upbeat rock music and an unpretentious clientele. It has live Xinjiang music on weekends after Happy Hour.

With some Bourbon beneath our belts, we decided a few Belgian brews were in order and headed to Beer Mania on Sanlitun South. Beer Mania recently added draft Stella Artois and some bottled Russian beers to the menu. We parked on the front step, which seats eight, and enjoyed draft Delirium Tremors while watching life pass by, which on this night included the CCTV weather guy as well as an older gentleman showing off his sidecar motorcycle thingy. By the way, this place specializes in beer, but manager Marc van Bever also makes some of the best Long Islands and Mojitos in town.

Speaking of cocktails, our next stop was the newly opened Q Bar on the nearby and somewhat seedy Eastern Inn. This joint is owned by bartenders George Zhou and Echo Sun and German investor Ralph . It features an extremely long bar, under tear-dropped shaped lights of which George is quite proud, and a sizeable deck. It's an airy and comfortable space. And given the lack of a kitchen, the more than 50 patrons, and drinks that start at 40 kuai, the place was doing a healthy business , with a majority of patrons being twenty-something patrons. However, despite eight people behind the bar, drinks were a bit slow in coming, and one reader was highly annoyed that even with a big backlog of orders, the bartenders were meticulously measuring out shots, individually mixing and shaking each drink, and doing taste tests. Talk about a clash of civilizations: thirsty throngs versus perfectionist bartenders . This is one kink that needs to be worked out pronto. Even so, the music was good, the large deck cool and pleasant, and (once acquired) the vodka martini top notch .

Looking for your World Cup fix? The Pavillion and Frank's Place promise large outdoor screens, while Club Football , Red Ball , John Bull Pub , The Den , Goose and Duck (see below), W Sports Bar , Mojito , and everyone else and their goalkeeper will also be showing games. Is anyone out there (besides me) looking for a place to instead watch the NBA finals ? / Beer Mania has added Russian brews to its mostly Belgian menu. Razed. Chai'd. Bye bye'd. Beijing's three-meter salute to drinking – the Sanlitun beer mug — was not only a dispenser of cigarettes, gum and beer, but also a reference point for locating dozens of bars. Now it's gone, tossed on the dust heap of history in what is already a very dusty city. Not even a cement coaster remains. As always, change is in the air and Opening Shots covers eight bar scene developments.

ONE

Crisis at First Cafe : it was long my favorite bar but cocktail quality has slid quite a bit during the past year, though the ambience remains good. With the nearby beer mug gone, what does fate hold for this cozy watering hole , especially given that its sign has been turned off for nearly two weeks ?

TWO

Meanwhile, ex- First Cafe , ex- Midnight bartenders George Zhou and Echo Sun nearly have Q Bar ready atop the Eastern Inn on Sanlitun South. The place will have dim lighting, cozy couches, and jazz and blues music, with the interior and deck much more spacious than what George and Echo have before handled. The wildcard is the cocktails — their claim to fame — and whether the (quality) martinis will smoothly flow should the place hit its peak capacity of over one hundred people.

(By the way, some wonder why I so regularly write about George and Echo. In short, they epitomize everything about opportunity in China . A couple of years ago, they were out-of-town novice bartenders, learning their craft and making little money. They worked hard, built up their mixing skills, bar knowledge and a loyal following, and now have their own place. To me, that is a compelling story .)

… as will TRIO , with a soft opening on Friday (May 12). Near the Rosedale Park, Japanese School and Si-de Park, TRIO has a piano bar and a New York-style grill on the top floor, the new Frank's Place at ground level, and The Cellar in the, uh, cellar. This is a major project and the big question is whether it can stick in an area that is not exactly known for nightlife. The Cellar itself is unique in Beijing with its wrought iron doors, stucco walls, arch ceiling, earthy feel and focus on wine. There will be a Club 88 , with an 8888 kuai initial investment and 3888 kuai annual fee, where members receive free wine dinners and cooking classes, discounts on wine, and a 32-bottle onsite storage space (lock and key included). The top floor grill, complete with baby grand piano, seats 50, while Frank's Place holds 110 and has a pool table, a bar, eight TVs and outdoor seating in front and back. Speaking of outdoors, The Pavillion now has a most pleasant patio . Comfy wicker chairs, lush grass, serene trees — a nice spot for a few pints or bottle of wine. (The cocktails are okay, though one Mojito came with uncrushed mint and the Long Island had too much Coke. Word has it that the food has greatly improved with ex-Aria chef Richard Millar now on hand.) This seems to be the Year of Outdoor Seating . There are newcomers, such as Frank's Place , Le Petit Gourmand , 5:19 , Cafe Pause , The Pomegranate and The Bookworm (though the nearby construction is annoying); old-timers, ranging from Bar Blu , Stone Boat and Le Quai to numerous Houhai spots; and more decks, patios and rooftops coming, such as at Blue Fox .

FIVE

Glenn, we hardly knew you! My suspicions about tensions between the owners and staff at Browns turned into reality as Glenn Phelan , who joined Browns when he left Pavillion after a three-month stint, resigned as floor manager (the DJ soon followed and there may be more fallout). Look for Glenn to have his own spot in a few months. Meanwhile, investor Philip Cheung says that Browns' Russian sidebar will open next month and that ladies' night, on Wednesdays, will be extended from 2 AM to 3 AM (the free drinks have been cut back to a select list of cocktails). As expected, Guinness and Kilkenny prices have risen to 40 kuai, from 35 kuai, which begs the question: when will they go up again?

SIX

Efforts to duplicate the Centro phenomenon continue with one high-end hotel recently launching Champagne and another expected to open a bar this summer. Palms threw its hat into the ring about six months ago, though it was quickly tossed back. Champagne might want to resist describing itself, in its adverts, as “fast becoming the hottest place in the city for Beijing's social elite ,” because if one of my visits was any indication, those elites number less than a dozen. It would be much more useful to study Centro ' s excellence in effectively welding great location with calculated and sustained marketing.

SEVEN

I recently wrote that Beijing's cocktail scene was stumbling down the proverbial stairs . In hindsight, it might have been a case of “ one step backward, two steps forward .” Q Bar is about to open, Garden of Delights serves up excellent Mojitos, Centro has upgraded its cocktail list, master mixer Marc van Bever has returned to Beer Mania (luckily that cast is on his ankle, not on his wrist), Jackie at Browns is sharpening his skills ( Agent Red Wolf gave the Mojito a thumb up), Modern Nomads has those Chinggis vodka Martinis, and so on. Things do seem to be looking brighter.

Two tasty blue cheese martinis : 75 kuai. I had forgotten how agreeable happy hour is at Centro (to 8 PM). Even better, I hear bartender Bruce Li will soon have some new concoctions learned during a stint Down Under . / While Browns continues to bustle, Suzie Wong’s has a new first floor bar that has been, um, throbbing (see below). By the way, three Long Islands at Browns last Saturday: one was near perfect, one candy floss sweet, and one sans ice and Coke. Am I being too picky or just bitter that manager Glenn and supervisor Jackie nearly set me aflame recently (see below)? By the way, Chef John's Buffalo-style wings (hints of blue cheese and basil) and spring rolls dipping sauce are excellent . / Down the street from old Sanlitun South is newly opened Sina ja Mina (“You and Me” in Finnish). It's a bare bones bar (as are Sesame and Black Sun on the same street), but the owners are friendly and have Finnish drinks such as… well, only Finlandia vodka (25 kuai). M-Dawg found the apple juice (15 kuai) quite refreshing . / Rumor says a new Bookworm will soon wiggle onto the scene near Lido Hotel. / Andrew “Jr. Boy” Jones is playing at the Icehouse , April 5-30. / Q Bar , which will feature cocktails by ex-First Cafe, ex-Midnight bartenders Echo Sun and George Zhou, opens on the Eastern Hotel's rooftop during second-half May. That's walking distance to Sanlitun South ( Modern Nomads , Beer Mania ), Sanlitun North ( Cheers , The Tree ) and Gongti West ( Pavillion , clubs galore). / Ah-Q is belting out jazz at Browns on Thursday nights until, it seems, CD Jazz Club reopens. I'm there now, as I finish this newsletter, and the place is packed. Browns might be wise to sign them on.

Mission Mojito: Agent Red Wolf gets all minty

Whether in a five-star hotel lounge or a dingy bar on Sanlitun South, few people are as objective when evaluating a cocktail as is Agent Red Wolf (RW). She can block out any surrounding chaos and focus solely on the quality of a given beverage. Simply put, when lip meets glass, not even the shiniest object can distract her . Here are her top five Mojitos , with the establishment's name (in alphabetical order), followed by the drink price (as closely as can be remembered), number of visits, and comments (if any).

Beer Mania : ~35 kuai; 2 visits; “This is closer to a tailor-made drink; you should only have the Mojito at Beer Mania if Marc [the manager] is making them.”

Centro : ~70 kuai+15%; 10+ visits; “Centro and Redmoon consistently make a high-quality Mojito.”

Garden of Delights : ~70 kuai; 1 visit; “The mint was fresh and the rum was good, though I asked for more soda water, as their Mojito was too sweet for me.”

Redmoon : ~70 kuai+15%; 6-7 visits.

Suzy Wong : ~40 kuai; dozens of visits; “A lot of guys here are poseurs [yes, she picked up this word from me], but this place has good drinks.”

RW also recalled some Mojito memories from Beijing past.

First Cafe : 50 kuai; last year during the “GE [George and Echo] era;” (now, says RW, the Mojito at First Cafe “is not even in the top 20″).

Havana : 40 kuai; more than two years ago.

Latinos : 40 kuai; until recently.

W: Spaghetti with ping pong balls on top

Six months after my last visit, I returned with M-Dawg and Pony , primarily because our first choice for brunch was closed. (Way to go, Modern Nomads : Next time, prepare a brunch before you advertise it.) Frankly, W really bothers me . First, the buffet brunch (58 kuai, sans drinks): there are plenty of choices, but many are mediocre , and besides the passable sausage and the bacon-wrapped chicken, the “Brazilian BBQ” meat is nothing special. Second, the decor : foosball table, ping pong table and dart board; DJ booth and disco ball; sofas, table seating and barstools; ping pong paraphernalia, modern art and a Sergeant Pepper's plate on the walls. It's like being at a trade show for bar and restaurant themes . Finally, the projectiles : is it just me or is it annoying to have ping pong balls zinging at the table during lunch ? On the plus side, the place was half-full, so it seems there are Beatles-ping pong-disco-so-so-salad fans out there.

A Beijing Saturday night

Last Saturday night was supposed to entail getting together with friends for a few drinks. Instead, it turned into a bar-hopping marathon. I don't typically stay out until the wee hours any more, but this was an exception:

Beer Mania (Sanlitun South; 20:15): You rarely go wrong by starting a night with a few Belgian brews, so RJ, SW and I met at Beer Mania. We pretty much had the place to ourselves as we sampled seven different beers, including a nice Rochefort . Manager Marc van Bever is planning to do beer tastings every Thursday. Patrons get to sample ten beers for 150 kuai. Call 13126-904-396 for details.

Browns (Sanlitun South; 22:45) Carnegie's in Taipei is famous (infamous?) as the city's most raucous night spot, featuring great service, a massive beverage selection (including 366 shooters), an admirable layout and a long bar where the wilder (and usually drunker) clients get up and dance the night and early morning away. It's a runaway success and now Browns is seeking to emulate it in Beijing (there are also Carnegie's in Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Perth, and a Browns in London). With RJ heading home, Agent Red Wolf and WF joined us to check it out.

Although only open for two days , and having details to work out – the menu desperately needs a spell check: “Soff drinks”, “Carlsbery”, and on and on; there are some weird prices: 42 kuai for a martini, 43 kuai for a “martini favorite”; and the toilets need a cleaning – Browns has the potential to be a great bar and possibly the best of the year .

The martini was decent (though not particularly dry), the beer was reasonably priced (pints of Kilkenny and Guinness at 35 kuai), and the thin-crust pizza was tasty. The staff, which includes five Filipinos, was polite and efficient (though they could drop the “ma'am” and “sir” stuff). Lisa, who handled our table, was excellent. When Agent Red Wolf felt her Long Island Iced Tea needed more rum and lime, it was quickly topped up.

The long bar has a brass railing up top to keep the expected dancers from falling into the employees and massive shelves of alcohol . In front of the bar is a standing / dancing area, and behind that two levels of seating. The decor is flat black and white , with dark wood, brass and glass accents , and the walls contain music-themed pictures and instruments. The high ceilings will minimize smoke .

We had a nice chat with Lawrence Chen , the general manager, and Jacky Kong , the supervisor, who said they plan to open adjoining Mexican, Japanese and other themed rooms. うーん。 In any case, it's a great start for Browns, with the only downside being that the spotlights and dance music were out of sync with the feel of the bar , especially given the sparse crowd. It just doesn't seem right to have electric guitars and pictures of Jimi Hendrix on the walls and then only play music typified by Black Eyed Peas' “My Humps.”

Palms (Chaoyang Park, South Gate; 00:30) Some random observations during my second visit to Palms: It's in a mall; the menus are shaped like pianos and wine bottles; there are too many chairs; the men's and women's toilets are far from spotless and there was no toilet paper (again) . When I ordered a martini, the waiter asked, “With ice”?

On the positive side, the management and staff at Palms are extremely friendly and open to comments. Something is amiss, though. Maybe it simply needs some fine-tuning with the drinks (my martini was sub- par) and decor. Or maybe the live music doesn't fit the environment (or maybe it's good in a bad way, depending on your taste). When I hear a band member shout out “everyone, sing along!” for “Jesus Christ Superstar” , I have to ask, Does anyone in the place know that song, let alone the words? Would it not be better to have fewer songs in English and more in Mandarin (a la Teresa Deng and Faye Wong), thus drawing a moneyed Chinese crowd that would enjoy being in a big interactive KTV lounge?

By the by, after the set ended, SW started shouting out “ Phantom of the Opera! ” and got into in protracted negotiations with the singer that eventually ended with the band doing a raucous, if slightly over the top, rendition of “ Don't Cry For Me, Argentina .” That was the high point.

Nashville (Maizidian; 01:40) When we rolled into Nashville, we figured the place would be half-empty and the band finished. Instead, there was a good crowd on hand and singer-guitarist Chris had the place rocking. Bar-goers hooted out requests and sang along, and one patron got up and sang The House of the Rising Sun . (Note: This is the atmosphere for Palms to create.) Good times all around as Chris cranked out everything from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Bryan Adams to Johnny Cash . Agent Red Wolf and WB both thought the Long Island Iced Teas were good.

Maggie's (Ritan Park, South Gate; 02:50) We dropped SW off on our way home and then decided last-minute to keep the night going. The new Maggie's is much tamer than the old and the layout is too narrow, but as Agent Red Wolf points out, they play fun music. We hit the dance floor and unloaded a few of the calories picked up earlier in the night.

As usual, there were ample people-watching opportunities , with the guy beside us falling asleep on, and then falling off, his chair. He lay on the floor, apparently unconscious, for a few minutes. The security guards propped him up and then he suddenly popped back to life . I suspect something stronger than alcohol was in his system. Anyway, this incident seemed to inspire another man to move in on WF and it wasn't long before we spirited her away. To our horror, the hot dog stand outside had already closed!

Agent Red Wolf and I dropped off WF and decided that, sans hot dogs, we needed food. Where to go? The Den ? Bellagio ? 7-ELEVEN ? We ended up at Dacheng Jie (beside Gino's) and pigged out on dumplings, xiaolongbao, soybean milk and more. We briefly considered hitting one more spot, but decided to end the morning on a high note and get some sleep before Sunday brunch.

Beer Mania: Belgian brew stop

While Morel’s , The Tree and others sell Belgian beers, Beer Mania is smaller, cozier and has information about each brew, with manager Marc van Buren providing recommendations upon request. Thus, as I sipped a Maredsous Triple (10%), I flipped through Petite Fute : Guide to Belgian Beers and learned that my beer's “acidity, softness and bitterness make this clear blond with a persistent head a harmonious beer – balanced, round and full.” Superb! As for the Westmalle Triple (9.5%), I noticed the fruitiness even before reading about its “fruity and herby nose accompanied by notes of fresh hops.” Excellent! These beers are 35 kuai each during happy hour (regular price: 50 kuai). I've thrice visited Beer Mania since mentioning it in issue II, including last Saturday night with Agent Red Wolf and K-Dog [Kraft-D] , who was in town from Shanghai. The place won't win any awards for layout and decor, but is great for “shopping” for Belgian beers by perusing the glass-fronted refrigerator. K-Dog described Marc as a “perfect” manager – “he isn't intrusive and appears just in time to recommend another beer.” My only suggestion: erect a wall or hang draperies in front of the toilet so patrons don't get a view inside it each time the door is opened.

Beer Mania: A fridge (not) too far

A couple of weeks ago, I threw on a jacket and went for a walk on a superb cool Beijing night . After 20 minutes of burning calories, I came across Beer Mania. It's a modestly sized spot and serves dozens of kinds of Belgian brews , and keeps them in a nice glass-fronted fridge so you can “go shopping” and see what's soon to be in your tummy. Marc van Bever is also on hand to help you pick out some beers. Note: some of these beers are in the 10 percent alcohol range and are not to be drunk lightly.

With a dozen small tables and a short bar, Beer Mania seems to be ideal for small groups of friends . A glance at the menu shows the place serves crepes and a wide range of cocktails . A glance out the window showed three patrons opening packages of Hormel ham and — with each slice neatly rolled up — packing it away. Nothing like processed meat chased down by Duvel . (By the way, I've popped into Beer Mania twice more and my first impressions hold true — except for the ham.)
