Hard to find spots
I am regularly asked about how to find a particular bar or restaurant. (Note: I prefer such calls before midnight on weekdays.) Here are some of the most frequent requests, with pop-up maps to help you find each place and links to previous posts about it. The date after each listing indicates when I posted or updated it here.

Where is Chocolate?
Two parts LAN (décor), two parts Treasure Island (entertainment and clientele), one dash CJW (ascending seating areas), and a handful of potential trouble (those vodka shots catch up on you), this over-the-top, put-you-under-the-table club is here. See more posts about Chocolate. (05/19/09)

Where is Ichikura?
This cozy Japanese whiskey and cocktail joint, with room for 12 along the bar, a couple of small private rooms, about 100 single malts, decent cocktails, and a get-away-from-it-all vibe, is here. (See more posts about Ichikura.) (05/19/09)

Where is Ginkgo?
Formerly known as Room 101 and currently the beachhead for drinkers in Andingmen, this place, with a decent range of beers, a bar downstairs and a restaurant upstairs, and regular live music, is here. (See more posts about Ginkgo.) (05/19/09)

Where is Chuan Ban?
This typically packed Sichuan restaurant, with reasonable prices and enough pepper power to make the vast majority of spicy food fans sweat – note: ice cold beer helps – is here. (05/19/09)

Where is Obiwan?
This three-story joint with a dance floor, bars, lounge spaces, and a rooftop deck, not to mention the honor of nearly causing Mr. Brau’s shaved head to freeze solid when we spent an hour circling Houhai in an attempt to find it late one winter night, is here. (See more posts about Obiwan.) (05/19/09)

Where is Er?
Sibling establishment of Ichikura, Er offers the city’s best Bourbon selection (more than 20 kinds) bar none, room for about 20 patrons (either at the bar or at tables), and decent snacks, though the shared toilet across the lobby is a bit dodgy. You can find er here. (See more posts about Er.) (05/19/09)

Where is Café de la Poste?
Offering tasty steaks, a decent wine list, an earthy feel, and good ambiance, you can find this place here. (05/19/09)

Where is Lugar?
Yet another home to a significant single malt collection, this place offers a range of salads, sandwiches, and pastas, and a rooftop deck overlooking some hutongs. Lugar – also known as e.a.t. – is here. (See more posts about Lugar.) (05/19/09)

Where is Tun?
Despite its thriving Tuesday open mic night and an insanely crowded Friday ladies night, to go along with its cheap drinks and Beijing-inspired decor (think hutongs and The Great Wall), people still ask me where it is. Right here. (See more posts about Tun.) (05/19/09)

Where is Amilal?
Located in a sidestreet near Nanluoguxiang, this place offers a cozy feel. Sit in the small courtyard or on the cozy seats inside. Drinks range from a dozen single malts, each at RMB50 per pour, to Harbin and Tsingtao beers at RMB15. You can find it here. (05/06/02)
