Oyo House: Drinks, wifi, and all-day breakfast in Sanlitun

-

A few weeks ago I popped into the property previously parading as Pink and two guys at that then-under-construction spot confused me because one said it would become a lounge and the other said a clothing shop that served food. Seems both were kind of right as Oyo House is something of a hybrid lounge, cafe, and restaurant–it has the feel of being converted from an old shed with the cement floor and sloped ceiling retained–and will soon open an area that features clothing. The color scheme includes flat blacks, evergreens, and rich browns, the furniture is a combination of sofas and chairs, square tables for two and rectangular ones for four, and an attention to detail is evident from the orchids, candles, and vases carefully placed throughout.

Nice enough, and a pleasant surprise when compared to Pink, but what attracted me were these words: all-day breakfast.

There are about a half-dozen options, ranging from the American-style plate to cereal and fruit. I went for the RMB68 option that includes a slice of ham, a strip of bacon, two small sausages, eggs, mashed potatoes studded with crispy garlic bits, fried onions and mushrooms, two fresh rolls with butter and peanut butter, and a side salad. The presentation is nice, the meat and eggs properly cooked, though you best be a garlic lover if you get the potatoes (vampires beware). And you’ll need to move your butter bowl unless you like your spread melted by the heat coming off the eggs. The only thing I didn’t finish was the salad, due to the sharp vinaigrette. This breakfast is pricey at RMB68 and it would be nice if coffee, tea, or juice were included, otherwise even a single espresso pushes the bill past RMB85.

In terms of beverages, cocktails are RMB50 and up, bottled beer such as Tsingtao and Corona is RMB25, and the wine list, which I am told will be expanded, is small and good, though RMB55 for the most inexpensive glass of wine is pushing it, especially with a 125 ml pour.

The laptop crowd will be happy to know the wifi worked well while the people-watchers have the option of sitting on Oyo’s deck (see photo below), which faces the west side of 3.3.

Oyo has been open but five days and the manager told me it is a work in progress. The hours are 11 AM to midnight; later on weekends.
