Tongli loses its Kick: Is this space doomed?
Tongli Studio has lost its Kick. The latest bar to open across from Cheers has followed on the heels of predecessors Golden Club, Tanewha (with an “e”), Wonder Bar, and Taniwha (with an “i”). It underscores the ongoing changes afoot at Tongli these past few months: Bar Blu is under new management ownership, Le Petit Gourmand has parted ways with its manager Axel, Cheers has seen co-owner Leo depart the scene, Cosmos hot dogs has opened inside the south entrance, and – out front – Juliette’s and Muse have both opened. Given this, how about a slow hand clap for Apertivo, which has survived more than five years along this strip.
What is next for this space? That sealed door suggests one possibility. Whoever comes in next might keep it that way and instead make the entrance on the north side of Tongli, via a staircase, as is the case with 2F. (Or maybe 2F could take over – I really like what the guys have down that place). That would provide a more intimate and self-contained bar space. I’m not sure it would work, but given the shelf-life of the bars here so far, it might be worth a try…
As for Kick, my favorite places in this space were Wonder Bar, a cocktail and jazz bar that unfortunately decided after a few weeks to give up its theme, and Taniwha, which made for fun writing (Taniwha-ful, Taniwhy, etc).
