SUNDAY

MoDown at YaShow

Chill out — figuratively and literally — Sunday afternoon and evening with food, drink and music at some fave spots on Yashow West Side in Sanlitun…

TWO GUYS AND A PIE: From 2 PM, enjoy Vedett beer with labels that feature Maovember pin buyers. Those bottles are rmb20 each, with all money to TLP. We will also sell ‘Funk Fever’ Movember T-shirts, courtesy of Migas, and more pins. (Note: We got most of this month’s pin buyers on labels. Best to pick up those bottles earlier rather than later at Two Guys on Sunday.)

CHEERS WINE BAR: From 4 PM, and a few door down, warm yourself from the winter chill with a glass of gluwein inside. Each glass is rmb15, with all money to TLP. (See poster below.)

TAVALIN BAGELS: From 6 PM, just around the corner from Two Guys, check out the BBQ featuring La Chouffe-infused sausages by Andy’s Craft Sausages. Half of all money raised will go to TLP.

Also of note:

  • Don Lemmon (Ian Burns) and Jorge Arrowsmith (Troy Reilly) of The Beijing Beatles will do a “Magical Mystery Tour” of all three spots from 7 PM.
  • Funk Fever‘ compilations, courtesy of Migas, will play at Two Guys throughout the day.
  • All Maovember pin buyers will go into a draw for a Vedett keg party courtesy of Duvel Moortgat and The Local.

Finally, Christine Wang of The Library Project will attend both the MoDown on Sunday and The Brick bash on Saturday for the handover of the donations.

Note: If you can’t make either event but would still like to help Zhen Hua Migrant School in Beijing get a library, you can donate directly to Library Project on this page (pick “Maovember” on the drop-down menu asking where you heard about TLP).

For more updates, and other ways to donate, click the main Maovember page here.

Devaux and D Lounge: Liquid turkey dinner for Thanksgiving

To some, a Thanksgiving turkey is a large domesticated North American bird that is gutted, stuffed with a wide range of possible ingredients, from bread crumbs to raisins, and then cooked and served on the fourth Thursday of November. To others, willing to accept a more liberal definition, it is a bubbly grape-based wine made in the Champagne region of France. Who is right? Rather than quibble, or gobble, why not just say vive to le Thanksgiving difference?

There are lots of dinners this week celebrating that first turkey definition: click here for more than a dozen options. But for those seeking a bubblier — and vegetarian-friendly — option, your best bet is the Thanksgiving Champagne tasting at D Lounge tonight. For rmb160, you get four different Champagnes by Devaux, plus “all the fixings”, which is a fancy way of saying canapes, which is a fancy way of saying snacks.

Given this Champagne is several cuts above most of the stuff served in Beijing, and that a bottle at retail would cost at least three or four times more than the rmb160 event fee, this is a pretty sweet, er, dry deal. Here are the event details:

Maovember: We are helping furnish a library at this Beijing school

zhen hua library projectThe first Maovember donation to The Library Project happened after last Saturday’s charity corn toss tournament. The money will help Zhen Hua Migrant School in Xiao Tang Shan Town in Changping in Beijing. The school has 16 classrooms, 30 staff members and 900 students from grades one through six. What it doesn’t have is a library.

The donations from last weekend and this coming weekend will help furnish one. That means 1000-plus children’s books, teacher materials, furniture, including tables, chairs and bookshelves, and educational toys such as a globe and CD recorder. It will also help The Library Project to provide librarian training and monitor the school for three years.

Total cost: rmb20,900.

In other words, less than the bottle of Chateau Lafite someone brought into my friend’s restaurant the other night, the market value of 0.5 square meters of the apartment I rent near Workers Stadium, or, and this is just a guess, the nightly depreciation on the average matte Lamborghini haphazardly driven near that apartment in the wee hours of many a morning. Or about 400 martinis. On second thought, let’s not make this too personal, let’s just stick with that Lamborghini example.

In any case, the idea is “small change means big change” and thus the money is being raised one mao per bagel, sausage or pie at a time, via people agreeing to match those funds, and by selling raffle tickets for this Saturday’s co-ed mustache bash, beer for this Sunday’s MoDown, and Maovember pins. For details on the Maovember sponsors and events, and how you can participate — for those to whom it matters, The Library Project is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization and you can donate directly to it — click here.

Sixteen teams gathered at The Irish Volunteer / Hockey Bar on Saturday afternoon for the first Beijing charity tournament featuring small bags of grain being thrown at a hole in a distant board. Call it cornhole, corn toss, bean bag throw, or whatever, this addictive activity inspired fierce competition throughout the afternoon and into the evening. In the end, Simon and Warren from The Beavers took the title. Our team, Bean BagNum P.I., got decimated in the semi-finals.

Later in the evening, rmb5580.4 was donated to The Library Project, with charity rep Morgan Zhao on hand to count and sign for the cash. The total included rmb3000 from Maovember pin sales this month at Two Guys and a Pie plus rmb1810.4 from tournament team fees and donations at The Irish Volunteer / Hockey Bar along with rmb420 from Screech shots (thanks to Troy, George, Trish and Matt) and rmb350 from Maovember pin sales on the day (thanks to Olia, Trish, George, Kenny, Mona, Christopher and Morgan. Also to Frank, whose pin money came after the handover and will go into the next one).

The Volunteer: We played cornhole with the teacher from Glee

Morrison double-checks the score.

Celebrity sightings in Beijing. Milas Kunis in Sanlitun. Lebron James in Yashow. Stacy Q in Q Bar. Yeah, yeah, you saw someone. Big freaking deal. We all — well, most of us — have eyes. But how many of those people did you play cornhole with? What’s that? I can’t hear you. Oh, none. That’s what I thought. But some in our city have been able to mix celebrity sighting and spot.

It happened at The Irish Volunteer one recent fine evening. The beer was flowing, the pizza was piping hot, the cornhole — or what I much prefer to call “bean bag toss” — was getting competitive. Then a car pulled up, a back door opened and out stepped… Matthew Morrison. Who is that, you might — like I did — ask? Only one of the stars of Glee. He plays high school teacher / glee club leader Will Schuester.

Nothing against Morrison: I rarely watch TV. I haven’t seen a single episode of The Sopranos, Dexter or Breaking Bad. I catch up on TV on flights and it has been Parks & Recreation the last few times. But given the general reaction at The Irish Volunteer, this guy is a star.

And a nice guy. He signed autographs and took photos with nearly everyone in the place, ate a few slices of pizza, had a couple of drinks. Then he played bean bag toss and, like all else who take up this sport, saw what looks like innocent fun ignite a raging volcano of competitive fire deep down instead. Shouts of “get in the hole!” and “c’mon, baby!” exploded from various players. No other sport can cause you to give such strong words of encouragement to a bean bag.

Want to find out for yourself? We have three spots left in our twelve-team charity bean bag tournament this Saturday afternoon. Details here.
