Bad ass vs badass: Alibi opens, plus mini-Revolution, Fubeer at Fubar

alibi bar and restaurant menu beijing chinaAlibi Bar & Restaurant opened yesterday in the former Kiosk space. Not the former former Kiosk in Nali Studio but the former pink one just north of Workers Stadium.

The focus is American pub grub, so expect burgers, hot dogs, fries and the like, in this case presented in a newspaper-style menu with liberal use of the word “ass“. Future editions might want to use “badass” in place of “bad ass” on the front page (see above) lest someone think it refers to a sub-par donkey sandwich..

I went yesterday with DZ Rider and we started with regular fries (rmb15), good value at that price. We then split a cheeseburger (rmb35) and “fat ass” dog (rmb35), the latter featuring a wiener wrapped in bacon. Both were acceptable, though they get higher marks for presentation than taste, with DZ describing the meat as a bit “over-worked” — that slight powdery texture — and dry.

Things look hopeful since that dryness should be easy enough to fix and there are few places in the Sanlitun-Gongti zone where one can get a 500 ml local beer for rmb10 and burger for rmb30 while chilling on a patio.

Also of note, the management seems open to suggestions. (That includes to our comment that perhaps the menu could forgo using “big bite” since it is associated by many with Kiosk and owner Sasha Uncovic.) We’ll see what happens. As a friend notes, this place has the potential to become a kind of Rickshaw 2013.

More photos of Alibi food at the bottom.

Meanwhile, the mini-Revolution will not be televised. At least not given the private nature of this tiny bar — check out the padlocked door below. This place looks almost ready to go. As I sipped a Bloody Caesar at Two Guys and a Pie next door two nights ago, the finishing touches went on the small deck out front and owner Xiao Ming stopped by to inspect the progress. He looked pretty busy so I didn’t bother him. Plus, I had a pie. And a Bloody Caesar. Priorities are priorities.

Fubar’s Kevin Zhang said the regular price will be rmb50 for a 460 ml glass but expects to have a special on this one for the first month or two, perhaps rmb30. If I hear of any specials, I’ll post more.
