Wine, wine, wine in Beijing: Major Carrefour, Aussino, Hilton tastings coming up…

CARREFOUR FALL WINE FAIR

Fancy a free free flow of primarily entry-level wine while observing the overindulgent accidentally drive shopping carts into inanimate objects? Head to the Shuangjing branch of Carrefour this Friday evening — tonight — and ye shall drink and watch to, respectively, your liver’s and eyes’ content. You can also get a 20 percent discount on most bottles. As in previous years, I recommend you:

  • BYOG (bring your own glasses) unless you want to spend the night imbibing from the tiny vessels provided by Carrefour.
  • Be careful around anyone with a shopping cart.
  • Check out the catalog. You can get the current one here.

AUSSINO WORLD WINES FESTIVAL AT SOFITEL WANDA

Aussino, one of China’s top importers, distributors and wine outlet franchisers, is holding a “World Wines Festival” on October 19 and October 20 at the Sofitel Wanda Hotel. This event includes everything from a wine dinner to an auction to seminars, including those on Australian wine appreciation, by Neil Hadley, and on Bordeaux wine, by Julien Boulard. A tasting of several hundred wines, from over a dozen countries, will be held 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM on October 20, with an entry fee at rmb280. I’ll have more details on the schedule soon.

HILTON BEIJING FOOD & WINE EXPERIENCE XV

This is the fifteenth year for the Food & Wine Experience and will include, as usual, the chance to sample from more than a thousand wines, plus food stalls (I’m told they will be intermingled with the wine stalls this year) and seminars on everything from wine to coffee to chocolate. Also, today I’m launching a contest with the Hilton to give away tickets and an overnight stay in the presidential suite. Just in case you would prefer to relax after imbibing rather than stumbling home. Tickets for the Food and Wine Experience are rmb280 per person. To buy some or to get more info, call 5865-5125.
