Jeff’s joint: Powell to open Back Alley Bistrot tonight

J-POWW getting his roux ready last night.

Back Alley Bistrot, the new project by Jeff Powell — known for his work at Flamme, Element Fresh, Gung Ho, Kro’s Nest, The Orchard and, next door and most recent, Frost — is set to open tonight, he says.

The menu includes about two dozen options, including soups like AndouilleĀ  sausage and chicken gumbo (rmb38), salads like “The Wedge” with iceberg lettuce, pancetta, chives, blue cheese and creme fraiche (rmb48), mains liked cedar plank roasted salmon (rmb118) or a combo of duck leg confit and roasted duck breast with lime mashed sweet potatoes and sour cherry sauce (rmb128) and sides like roasted pumpkin with hazelnut brown butter (rmb38). There are several desserts, such as chocolate hazelnut truffle tart (rmb38), but he isn’t sure if he’ll have them on the first night.

Powell also has his wine and beer lists ready. The latter includes Belgian brews La Chouffe and De Koninck on tap and five 750 ml bottle options.

Back Alley Bistroit will open this week from 5:30 PM to 10:30 PM, says Powell.

The dining areas are good to go.
