Sips & bites: Southern Barbarians, one-pound burgers and sirloin steak deals

Southern Barbarian opens its Beijing branch tonight in Baochao Hutong: look for the ornate entrance at Deja Vu Hostel just down from Mr Shi’s Dumplings. Owner Feng, also known to many from Fish Nation, is a major beer fan. He is importing three products from Prague to join a stock of dozens of other tasty brews, including one of my old standbys, Cooper’s Pale Ale. The food is home-style Yunnanese: think grilled goat cheese, mashed potatoes with picked vegetables, sauteed mushrooms, kebabs, etc. Southern Barbarian is open daily from 5 PM for at least the first week and will later will also open for lunch.

Union Bar & Grille in Sanlitun Village will soon add a double-burger to its menu. This thing is a monster, made with a pound / 460 grams of beef. The one pictured below is topped with cheddar, mushrooms and bacon, with Swiss cheese between the patties. Goes great with a nice healthy slice of tomato. Look for this burger — enough food for two — to start at rmb130, with the one below at rmb155. Also look for Union to add popcorn chicken to the snacks menu.

Steak fans / Lido-ites / people who have yet to visit the Indigo project in Lido: You might want to stop by the new Blue Frog as it is doing its weekly “steak out” daily from August 8 to August 12. You get a 227-gram / 8-ounce Aussie sirloin with soup and a glass of wine for rmb180. From 4 PM to late. And you can always pair this with the happy hour deal. This week-long steak special is only available at the Indigo branch.
