Q-Mex gets an early start on the whole Mayan end of the world thing with a party on Saturday night. Marketing director Chris Ruggles says the end will start at 10 PM and include a DJ, models, prizes and possibly dancers. (We’ll see if that last act features La Quebradita — or Macarena.) See the photo above. (By the way, I didn’t realize Ruggles was so curvy under those jeans and polo shirt. And the hair extensions really suit him.) Maybe Q-Mex can also reach out to the French, as their national day is on July 14, and call it a La Fin du Monde party
Speaking of which, expect the French to put on their best berets tomorrow and descend on Cafe de la Poste, La Taverne, Brasserie Flo and Salud, among other spots, to celebrate. One option: dinner at Le Petit Gourmand, with cheese and charcuterie just flown in from France, for rmb198 instead of the usual rmb348. RSVP: lpgourmand (at) yahoo.com.
Mao Mao Chong is doing brunch this Sunday, noon to 3 PM: rmb60 with nonalcoholic drink / rmb85 with an alcoholic drink. Food options include breakfast pizza, with bacon, egg, ricotta and more, BLT on toasted ciabatta, and sausage roll with chutney. The first two are also available without meat. The drink optioins range from Vietnamese coffee and milky Thai spiced tea to Bloody Marys and Australian wine. There will also be a ~dozen drinks at rmb35, from noon to 5 PM, including Maojitos and Mala Mules. RSVP by email to maomaochongstore (at) yahoo.com.
Trevor Metz has left Grinders and opened a new bar nearby. It’s called Plan B and is in the former Dao Le wine bar space, not far from Unconditonal Love Coffee.
Bang! Bang! saw a big turnout last weekend for its rmb88 deal that included three glasses of Slow Boat and pizza: Steve Williams says ~100 people ordered it on Saturday alone. Here’s hoping they organize another one soon.
And in that same strip, Poker King is opening in the former massage parlor and it looks like it has also taken over the second floor that stretches from IKI Korean restaurant to Loading. That area is expanding so fast it looks like nothing can hold ‘em.

Does that mean Grinders is closed or sold? Who runs it now.?
@ Carlot,
From what I understand, the remaining partners will run Grinders.
Cheers, Boyce
