The sign is up, the decor is nearly complete and the wine list is coming together at THE LOOP KITCHEN AND WINE, due west of Nearby the Tree. Look for this place to fully open within two weeks, says Weiley Lu, who has been involved in projects such as The Loop in Shuangjing and Lugar in the Gulou area.
This venue will operate from 5 PM to midnight, include an exposed kitchen and seat ~40, with a communal table up front, tables for two along the side, and a semi-private room in back with space for ten people. Given Lu’s track record with wine, I’m most interested in seeing what he picks for the 50-bottle menu. More on this and the food soon.
Nearby on Xindong Lu, Torres China will open its first EVERWINES shop in Beijing in two weeks, says Damien Shee. The shop will operate as wine bar, retail outlet and event space.
Also nearby, this time across from Yashow, REVOLUTION marked its first year in business last weekend. Revolution has built a solid reputation as a cozy place to grab a few drinks.
And as some fans of both beer and value know, HEAVEN SUPERMARKET has reopened just up the street after some renovations to fix rain damage.
Speaking of which, perhaps SWIRE’S SANLITUN VILLAGE SOUTH deserves an award for being one of the area’s best watering holes. Unfortunately, it would be given for its many leaks. This has been an issue since the earliest days, when Element Fresh was unable to open ahead of the Olympics because of water damage, namely a warped floor, which meant the place needed renovations before it had served a single Cobb salad.
It looks like the most recent casualty is UNION BAR & GRILLE, which is renovating its kitchen after years of accumulated water damage, says Andy Bright. Union will remain open, with a light menu of about a dozen salads and sandwiches, including the tasty chicken and avocado wrap, and a fully functional bar, which means that excellent happy hour is still available. Look for the kitchen to return to action in a few weeks.
Across the road in Sanlitun Soho, THE DRIVE-THRU has added Rogue Yellow Snow IPA and Young’s Double Chocolate Stout on tap, with plans for Kentucky Bourbon Ale in the pipeline. This place has plenty of eclectic options, whether you getting beer to go or for takeaway, and I tried REAL from Greece and Staropramen from Czech on my last visit.
Finally, also in beer news and as noted here, next weekend BANG! BANG! will offer one of the better deals in recent memory. On July 7 and July 8, from noon, patrons can get a pizza and three pints of Slow Boat brew for rmb88. Given that the regular price is rmb200, the place might have to add an extra exclamation mark for those two days.
