A bunch of Beijing restaurants with Canadian owners, managers or chefs will participate in Grade-Eh Week from June 25 to July 1 by featuring foods with a Canuck theme on their menus (more details here). One of these is Simon Gauthier of A Food Affaire, which will feature two items at its four locations in the city.

BB: What are your items for Canada Grade-Eh Week?
Gauthier: We are pushing Mom’s Beefy Mac and Cheese, which is not to be confused with your regular KD. This is made with a mix of three cheeses — cheddar, mozzarella and Parmesan, two of which are made in Canada. We add beef, peppers and some tomatoes, it gets baked with loads of cheese on top, and it ends up more like a lasagna. It will come with choice of salad and will cost rmb38 during Canada Grade Eh Week. Afterward, it will be rmb46.
What would win a dessert fight between Nanaimo Bars and Beaver Tails?
Sure, beaver tails are big and fluffy but Nanaimo bars would totally kick it. They deliver the good ol’ flavour of home, and make you think of your family and especially your Aunt Alma, who always made them. [A Food Affaire will have Nanaimo bars, during Grade-Eh Week, at rmb18.]
Who is the most famous person you’ve served at A Food Affaire?
Hard to say. While there are several actors, actresses, models and athletes that come into the shop, I think the most famous person A Food Affaire has served was not in any of the shops but at an event we were catering for. And I do not want to start a war between stars as to who is the most famous but… names like Jackie Chan, Angelica Cheung and Far East Movement might be up there
What beer do you miss most from home?
Back in the day, I used to really be into Sleemans and then I discovered Pale Ale.
If you opened a Canadian bar in Beijing, what would you call it?
Home Plate. Wait, that’s already taken…
