Get your fill of Mudder’s Milk, fresh bao and episodes of what might be the coolest TV show ever broadcast in The Verse. I’m teaming up with Kenn and Nick at bar and restaurant Brussels for a Firefly event this Sunday night from ~7 PM to midnight.
If you know nothing about Firefly, see here and here. This futuristic show by Joss Whedon, whose most recent work is The Avengers, kicks pigu.
I’m not a big TV guy, but I love Firefly for its grit: no sleek super-tidy spaceship for this production, not when the job is to transport, say, a herd of cattle to a newly populated planet. For its use of language: most dialogue is in English, with creative swearing done in Mandarin, given the premise that the United States and China merge in the future. And for its nine key characters, from captain Mal to mechanic Kaylee to companion Inara to doctor Simon, who have their foibles and hilarious moments and are ultimately likeable.
Anyway, if you’ve seen the show, you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, and you’re interested, please join us. This won’t be a fancy do, mind you, just a chance to get some people together for some fun.
Our plan is to use the big screen for the two-part opener, plus Objects in Space, Jaynestown and Ariel. Like a particular episode? Let us know by leaving a comment or contacting me via Weibo, Twitter or email (beijingboyce (at) yahoo.com).
As for victuals and tonics, we’ll have a few takes on eats and drinks from the show, including a version of Mudder’s Milk, shimmerwine and possibly liquid “ice planet” as well as “wife soup” and fresh bao and stew.
Much appreciated if you give me a heads up if you plan to attend. It doesn’t commit you, of course, but would help us prepare enough stuff.
Brussels is in Sanlitun South, in the same building as Kro’s Nest, but on the east side, facing 1949: The Hidden City.
