Canada ‘Grade Eh’ Week:
Northern Eats & Drinks
in Beijing
June 24 t0 July 1, 2012
(Organized by The Eh Team)
~
Maple syrup, Moosehead, poutine, um…
Ask people to name some foods and drinks associated with Canada and they might cite two or three items, draw a blank, and then suggest something like “moose burger“.
True, Canadians are known more for skating about and punching each other in the face (known as hockey) and — in China — for figures like Norman Bethune and Da Shan.
But there are also some fun eats from The Great White North and we aim to share those, or twists on those, from June 24 to July 1 in the lead-up to Canada Day.
A half-dozen places in Beijing owned or managed by Canadians have agreed to each put an item on their menus that week (see below). We’ll add more venues and details on the dishes, prices, etc in coming days. Stay tuned, hoser.

As noted, we’ll be reaching out to more restaurants with Canadian owners and managers, so expect plenty of updates, and hopefully some Montreal smoked meats, salmon dishes, and maybe even beaver tails and prairie oysters, plus drinks deals. If anyone has questions or wants to get involved, let me know at beijingboyce (at) yahoo.com.
And for those who will inevitably comment “Canada has its own foods?” or “That [food name] is also popular in [country name]“, here’s your ha ha candy…

What about sugar pies and cream tarts? Or maple coffee sold at second cup but is nothing like the ones you DIY (if you have real maple syrup). And lastly, maple bourbon sour! Not the best drink for a hot’n sticky Beijing summer day but oh it’s good!
I might twist somebody’s arm off for a beaver tail.
