Sips & bites: Giggle, Blue Frog, KABB and Gung Ho Pizza

The colorful 'Dubai' zone...

GIGGLE recently opened in the Lezzis space near exit A of Beixinqiao subway stop, just above the 7-ELEVEN. The venue is divided into three areas: “forest”, with a leafy zone, wood flooring and brick walls; “Dubai”, with a lounge feel and large light panels that shift colors; and “Mediterranean”, with a bar and table seating.

The food menu includes salads from rmb28, sandwiches from rmb39, pastas from rmb28, pizzas from rmb39, and appetizers that range from kebabs to chicken wings to spring rolls. The draft beers are Vedett, Maredsous, Liefmans and Tsingtao (rmb10 to rmb35), while the bottled options include Chimay, Stella, Erdinger and Krombacher (rmb28 to rmb52). Most spirits are rmb25 to rmb30, with soda at rmb20. The specials include rmb20 Vedett all Saturday and a free Liefmans for female customers on Monday, 7 PM to close.

Co-owner David T, formerly at Kro’s Nest, says the plan is to fine-tune menus and specials over the next three months and that he is considering live music nights. I think the place is technically called Lezzis-Giggle (the former being the parent company’s name), though that logo (see below) reminds me of a quite different company. Anyway, you can follow Lezzis-Giggle on Weibo here or reach the restaurant at 6409-3066.  I only had 30 minutes to stop by yesterday but will be back to try the food and the “Dubai” zone.

Look for the third branch of BLUE FROG to open in ~three weeks in the Indigo project in Lido, says Greg Dover. He says there are also plans to open the first Beijing branch of sibling establishment KAAB (Kathleen’s American Bar and Bistro)  in Guomao.

I sampled a few lunch items at Blue Frog recently and will have more on those soon, but thumbs up for the vegetarian sandwich with marinated veggies like eggplants, mushrooms, zucchini and bell peppers, Parmesan, aragula and pesto mayonnaise on rye bread and the veal sausage with grain mustard sauce and mashed potatoes. There are six lunch specials each week, with soup or salad, and beverage, for rmb60 to rmb65.

By the way, I once wrote that Blue Frog serves up to 600 burgers on Mondays when it has its buy one, get one deal. Dover informs me that the record is 742 burgers at the Sanlitun branch.

Finally, I noted that Shuangjing restaurant Iki opened yesterday beside Gung Ho pizza in China View and will shift to normal hours today — 6 PM to 1 AM. On the same day, Gung Ho, which launched its first branch in China View, opened a delivery-only outlet in Shuangjing

Jade Gray says demand was high for opening day and “definitely exceeded expectations“. Customers ordering from the new outlet (5876-5262) get double pizza points until June 19 and Gungho says it plans some activities in the Fulicheng area over the next few days. More details here.
