Attention beer fans in search of further nourishment: a Beijing branch of Southern Barbarian is due to soon open in Baochao Hutong, just off Nanluoguxiang, and will not only stock around 80 beers but also a full menu of Yunnan dishes. Expect a lineup with the likes of Coopers, Brooklyn and Old-Speckled Hen, with food that hails from Mengzii, and thus has some Vietnamese influences, and that includes barbecue. Word is the owners will bring Czech beer Bohemia Regent to China. Look a mid-July opening.
Still on beer, the finalists for the Miss Kriek 2012 Contest will be chosen this Saturday, from 1 PM to 6 PM, at Sunrise Department Store in Sanlitun. Keith Frymark of organizer Vandergeeten says there will be more than 35 contestants as well as dance performances and prizes for the audience. You can follow it on Weibo here.
It was almost three years ago today, after seeing for the one hundredth time the Budweiser signs on the seventh floor of the Zhongyu building directly north of The Bookworm, that ksquare and I decide to investigate. The place turned out to be a cool spot called Zhongyu Hanging Gardens that I figured would become a regular stop on the itinerary (see photos here). Instead, it never really caught on, has gone through re-openings as Miss Saigon and, if I’m not wrong, Share Club, and now, says reader X-man, is on the verge of opening tonight as Bali Courtyard. I hope the management has done this spot justice because it has the potential to be one of the best spots in that part of town.
Finally, after being told by a half-dozen reliable sources that Korean restaurant Iki in Shuangjing would open a second branch, I asked one of the owners a few weeks ago if they had a new location. He said, “no, not yet”, which I translated as “yes, of course we do”, thus expect Iki to soon open its super-secret location -– they’re going Kobukson on this one -– as early as next week. No confirmation yet that as to whether or not it will be called Er-ki.
