There are hundreds of pizza places in Beijing, and at least a dozen within a ten-minute walk of my apartment alone — Pizza Buona, Danger Doyle’s, The Den, Da Giuseppe, The Tree, Kro’s Nest, Papa John’s, Red House, O Sole Mio, Sureno, Nasca Cafe, Yummy Box, La Pizza, Tube Station — and the list goes on.
It takes an extra something to get my attention as a member of the pizza-loving public. Something like an exclamation mark. I know Gung Ho!, with branches near Workers Stadium and in Lido, has one. And Bang! Bang! in Shuangjing has two. But such cases are rare, thus Yikes! Pizza in The Place stands out on nomenclature alone.
Frankly, that name doesn’t inspire confidence. Merriam-Webster defines “yikes” as a word “used to express fear or astonishment” — I hope customers express the latter, in a good way, rather than the former when they see the pizza. Anyone tried it?
