A Somewhat Young China Hand on the Local Drinking Scene

Sips & bites: Mao Mao Chong, Starfish, Compass Box, Blue Frog

~

My Bloody Mao withdrawal continues as renovations at Mao Mao Chong are taking a bit longer than expected thus the re-launch date for this cocktail and pizza joint has been pushed to March 16, says co-owner Stephen Rocard. Looking forward to seeing what art the walls feature next.

Speaking of Mao Mao Chong, the other co-owner, Stephanie Rocard, will tend bar at Starfish as the restaurant teams up with Compass Box, 85 Broads and VIVA for a “whisky and women” party on March 8. The party goes from 6 PM to 8 PM and the suggested minimum donation of rmb100 at the door — with the money going to Educating Girls of Rural China (EGRC) — gets you a cocktail made with Compass Box whisky (distributed here by XIX Spirits), three Oregon oysters and a raffle ticket.

The spring menu at Blue Frog is available from today and includes a lineup that ranges from grilled miso salmon steak to chicken and feta fettuccine. This place also now has food bingo cards: match five foods in any direction for a free entree or soup. The official launch party for the Chaoyangmen branch, in U-Town near Cashbox KTV, is slated for March 9 from 7 PM. RMB100 gets you a free flow of drinks and food, with the money going to charity.
