A Somewhat Young China Hand on the Local Drinking Scene

Sips & bites: Lunch at Switch, brats at Frost, beer at Biteapitta, wine at Orchid Hotel

~

Switch Grill opened Monday on the west side of Regentdale Center — first building east of Swissotel at Dongsishitiao circle — and thus completed its move from the 798 art district. I went for lunch today and tried the burger: I liked the texture of the thin layer of deep-fried onion ring in the burger but the star was the spicy mayo that came with the thick-cut fries. Will be back soon to try the Parmesan crusted chicken. There are two lunch options: two courses for rmb68 or three courses for rmb78, with four appetizer, five main and two dessert options (see menu below). An American coffee is rmb26.

As for cocktails, the list is short but sweet: Negronis, Manhattans, Bloody Marys, Old Fashioneds, Side Cars, Rob Roby and six kinds of Martinis, all at rmb52. The five bottled beers range from rmb16 for Tsingtao to rmb42 for Blue Star Wheat, while the draft options are Yanjing, Carslberg, Krombacher and Stella, the latter rather prohibitively priced at rmb62 for 500 ml. Meanwhile, wine by the glass starts at rmb25, for Mountain Pass, with Momo Sauvignon Blanc and Little Yering Syrah at rmb45. More info on the new Switch here.

Frost is serving bratwurst from the crock pot at the bar. Get a sausage on a bun, with six condiment options, including whole-grain mustard, sauerkraut and mayonaisse, for rmb28. The sausages are made according to his own fine-turned recipe, says Jeff Powell.

Biteapitta has new beverages to enjoy while you mow down on that mezza platter or kebab. Irish cider Magners is rmb50 (500 ml bottle) while Rogue Dead Guy Ale and Red Seal Ale are rmb40 and Buddha beer is rmb20.

The Orchid Hotel in Baochao Hutong will hold a tasting this Saturday night of seven Italian wines from distributor Venas Vinus. The fee is rmb100 and gets you samples plus snacks from 7:30 PM to 9 PM. Reservations essential: email info (at) theorchidbeijing.com.
