A Somewhat Young China Hand on the Local Drinking Scene

Beijinger Restaurant Awards: Boulud, Mosto, Modo get 10+ nominations, Home Plate pulls a Jeremy Lin

Who’s going to rock the awards this year?

~

The firecrackers of Chinese New Year are a fading memory, the winter ice is cracking near the Blue Zoo and voting is about to start for the ninth annual Beijinger Restaurant Awards.

Spring is nigh!

While I wonder how the increasing power of social media might affect the results, I’m still keen about the nominations. My source Minja-Dawg* says three restaurants received over ten nominations this year: Maison Boulud and, impressively, siblings Mosto and Modo.

As for newcomers, Temple fared best with eight nominations while Home Plate BBQ pulled a Jeremy Lin by coming out of nowhere to grab six nominations. (Well, maybe Home Plate didn’t come out of nowhere but the guys there did the equivalent of sleeping on their brother’s couch before they opened and quickly gained a fan base.)

Over 250 venues received at least one nomination. If you managed to visit all of them in the past year, get someone to give you a pat on the back because you’ve probably gained too much weight to do it yourself. And check The Beijinger tomorrow to see and vote on all of the categories.

Here a few categories relevant to this blog. For best late-night dining, the nominees are:

  • Bellagio
  • Biteapitta
  • First Floor
  • GL Cafe
  • Haidilao
  • Jin Ding Xuan
  • Lush
  • The Den

I guess 7-ELEVEN doesn’t count. Maybe we’ll see an expanded and more bar-oriented Sanlitun Kro’s Nest competing here next year.

As for best wine list, plenty of familiar names:

  • Aria (China World Hotel)
  • Cafe de la Poste
  • Enoterra
  • Maison Boulud
  • Modo
  • Mosto
  • Palette Vino
  • Pinotage
  • Sureno (Opposite House)

I’m a bit surprised Atmosphere didn’t make the cut; The Vineyard Cafe is another place that usually gets consideration here.

Finally, these is the rather contentious “personality of the year” category. More on this tomorrow….

* I changed his name from M-Dawg since one of his requirements before giving me a few details about the nominations was that I watch this Nicki Minaj / Will.I.Am video. The machinations of the modern media mystify me.
