Drei Kronen 1308: Brewing precision, marketing convolution, and happy hours
Drei Kronen 1308 (map) has extended the buy one, get one free deal for its tasty lager, wheat beer, and dark beer – kind of. Patrons seated in the “garden” out front or alongside this massive three-story establishment can enjoy the home brew deal at any time. Those inside will require more mental sharpness: the deal is from 5 PM to 7 PM and from 10 PM to midnight, though it only applies to lager in the latter period. In other words, be careful when and where you sit.
By the way, DK1308 has a RMB45 lunch special that includes a main (from German fare to more “international cuisine” such as Hong Kong shrimp) and a soup and salad bar. It won’t win any awards, but it does provide a solid lunch for hearty eaters.
No commentsBeijing’s newest pub: The Irish Volunteer
The Irish bar contingent has a new member: Backed by Frank’s Place investors Graham Forbes and George Smith, among others, The Irish Volunteer is a cozy spot near a couple of massage parlors and a nail salon on the north side of the Lido Holiday Inn (map). Decked out in woods, greens, and off-whites, the pub can fit about 30 in a narrow front area populated by stools, a larger space with chairs, tables, and bar, and a private room. Smith says The Irish Volunteer is “a place for conversation” and complements Frank’s Place, which has a strong sports focus.
Put together in a few weeks, the pub includes a bar built by Guinness, the old Hard Rock Cafe chairs, and tables from a closed restaurant, a mishmash that creates an unpretentious space to enjoy a few beers with friends. The initial food menu will include Irish breakfast, daily stews and soups, and an array of sandwiches, with plans to add fare such as burgers and fish n’ chips. Drink pieces will be similar to those at Frank’s Place, with an obvious focus – based on signage and bar theme – on Guinness.
The pub’s name is a reference to The Rising in Ireland, a 1916 insurrection led by a volunteer army against British rule. One investor said the name “is a little bit political, but mostly historical.”
The Irish Volunteer officially opens on April 3.
Tasting time: Jeremy Oliver, Carrefour spring fair, German wines, and more

After a prolonged absence, the wine events list is back, and just in time for some nice tastings: a blind one of Sauvignon Blanc that includes a vote at the end, a lineup of six German wines from three producers, and the upcoming (and free) opening of the Carrefour spring wine fair.
A new feature: Click “map” beside the venue name to get a pop-up map of its location or to send the address for free – in English or Chinese – to your phone. Also, I will keep an updated list of wine events on this page. Finally, it is always best to confirm details of a tasting ahead of time – if there is one constant in Beijing, it is change.

Lugar changes food and furniture, keeps cocktails and whiskey
Expect a new vibe at Lugar (map): The pool table has been replaced by more seating, the terrace will soon open with new furniture, and the Vietnamese menu has been dropped in place of pastas (RMB25), sandwiches (RMB22), salads (RMB22), and the like, made in cooperation with Nanluguoxiang’s Cafe Alba (map). Fortunately, owner Weiley Lu says the place will retain the same cocktail list and the growing Whiskey list, already among the best in Beijing. Look for a signs saying “eat” out front and “Lugar” along the side.

1 commentGlenn Phelan to re-launch Stadium sports bar as Danger Doyle’s
The sports bar rivalry in the Sanlitun-Workers Stadium corridor is bound to intensify now that Glenn Phelan (formerly Pavillion, Browns, Frank’s Place, and Paddy O’Shea’s; currently The Stumble Inn) has taken over as GM of Stadium in the China View complex.
Phelan plans to re-launch the place as Irish bar Danger Doyle’s on April 10. Expect free house drinks and German home brew (from Drei Kronen 1308 next door) from 8 PM to 10 PM, with blues outfit Black Cat Bone providing the music. Stadium is under the same ownership umbrella as Klubb Rouge and Drei Kronen 1308, but has drawn few customers despite having an excellent two-floor layout and design, a deck that can fit hundreds of people, a state of the art draft beer system, and pool tables, dart boards, and table-top shuffleboard.
Phelan says that patrons can watch their favorite sports, with commentary, upstairs, while those downstairs will get live music – an Irish musician is being flown in to play four nights a week from late April.
If Phelan can place Stadium on the sports bar map, it will mean an increasingly crowded field in this area of town, which includes The Pavillion, The Den, Hooters, The Rickshaw, Luga’s Villa, Blue Frog, and Paddy O’Shea’s. He plans to have more than 80 beers, including five on tap, and high-end whiskeys. The food will range from pizzas courtesy of a wood-fired oven to favorites such as bangers and mash. Beer prices will range from RMB20 for a pint of Tsingtao to RMB50 for Guinness, while house mixed drinks will be RMB25.
9 commentsAttention pediatricians and dentists: DJs Diaper and Black Tooth coming to Beijing
I rarely write about DJs in this space, but then again I have never had the manager of a soon-to-open nightlife spot – Club Sparkle on Workers Stadium West – tell me he will fly in a very, uh, childish star for his launch party in two weeks. The star in question has gone from nobody to cult figure in a mere two months in Europe because he does his sets while wearing nothing but a pair of flip flops, a t-shirt, and… a diaper?
Apparently, DJ Diaper, as he is not unsurprisingly known, started to do eight- to twelve-hour sets sans toilet breaks in Prague in January. Given he drinks several liters of water each night, the liquid had to go somewhere, so he began donning an adult diaper. Even more bizarre, some club-goers followed suit, even going so far as to decorate their lower body apparel with stickers, drawings, and whatnot.
Gee, first we get Michelin-star chefs, then we have the Olympics, and now our presence will be graced by a guy too lazy to hit the loo.
Anyway, DJ Diaper will be accompanied by his sidekick DJ Black Tooth, so named because he had a bicuspid removed and replaced with one made of vinyl taken from the hit record…
… April’s Fool.
