In my third Give a Crap Report III, a series that covers what people in the food and beverage scene would do if they actually cared what I thought, I wrote the following:
“18. The Union Bar & Grille would add another piece of toast to its brunch. Yes, two eggs, toast, hash browns, meat, and bottomless coffee for RMB45 is a superb deal, but here’s the problem: I put an egg on each of the two slices provided and thus need an additional slice to mop up the excess yolk and/or for the jam. One more piece, that’s all I ask. And if it happens, I would argue this is the best brunch deal in town.”
On my last visit, I noticed the place is now providing that extra toast (I am not claiming, nor do I believe, that the extra toast is due to me. I’m just happy this happened). Hard to beat this one…

You got THREE pieces of toast?? When we went the same day, me and my friend just got 2 each.. so maybe it’s just you. I also got the eggs with hashbrowns and Canadian bacon (which I was really disappointed in –it was TOO hammy for me..) but the meal didn’t include coffee?? Our total came to 100 each.
Oh.. another thing.. they tried to tell me apple juice from a carton was FRESH.. after I asked 4 times.. finally a manager came by and told me that they only had fresh orange juice!
ALSO.. the food came out barely warm, and got cold in about 2 mins.. they should try heating the place.. or put the food under a heat lamp until served.
Actually Boyce got 4 pieces, not 3. (Look closely at the photo – one piece is across the top of another.) But my GF and I, who were with him and who ordered wheat to Boyce’s rye, we got 4 pieces between us.
I had the eggs benedict with smoked salmon and some Canadian bacon on the side. Being a poor uncultured Australian(no that is not a tautology), I couldn’t comment on the quality of the bacon, but I didn’t mind it. The benedict was great, and was served hot. I would put it at least as good as the one at CSL, if not a little better, and certainly less expensive. A bottomless cup of coffee finished off the meal nicely. I didn’t order juice.
My GF ordered the mushroom omelet, and said it was great.
Three meals with 2 bottomless coffees and a hot chocolate for my girlfriend came to a total of RMB171. That’s not bad, considering the extra bacon.
Perhaps it was timing. When we ordered there were maybe 3 other tables seated. By the time we left, the place was at least half full.
@ everyone,
Can we distinguish “slices” from “pieces” of toast?
A slice would be a full slab cut from a loaf of bread. A piece might be a half of one of those slabs. Given this, I received two slices / four pieces of rye toast with my breakfast.
Cheers, Boyce
@ p3wong,
You have to ask for the coffee, and it is the standard brew, and doesn’t cover lattes, mochas, and the like.
The Canadian bacon was a bit chewier than usual but it was still tasty.
And it is not “just me” getting four pieces of toast – I have talked to other readers who received the toast and the bottomless coffee.
Boyce
@ 8 Songs,
I don’t think the toast you received was meant to be shared with your girlfriend. I think it came with her omelet, whereas your eggs Benedict are on bread, and thus don’t come with toast. So, she received the same amount of toast as me. I could be wrong but that’s my guess.
Cheers, Boyce
ok.. i ordered scrambled eggs and my friend ordered an omelette.. they asked us both what kind of bread we wanted.. and we ended up with 4 pieces between the two of us.
Why did Boyce get FOUR for himself?? SO NOT fair! hmph..
p3wong,
You received four pieces, that is, two slices cut in half, or eight pieces, that is, four slices cut in half?
I talked to another patron who received the same amount of toast as me, so not sure what is going on? I tried to call my contact at Union, but couldn’t get through. Will keep trying.
Cheers, Boyce
