There is an advertising law on the books in China that forbids the usage of superlatives such as “best” or “#1″ etc.

Owners wishing to play it safe will couch their terms with such langauge

Like I mentioned in an earlier post, Koreans use “hof” as the generic name for beer halls, so the Hasselhoff angle has synergy — this place could capture that to this point under-served Korean-German niche.

I think it has something to do with use of superlatives in advertising, as in, people aren’t supposed to do it. My favorite was W Sports and Music Bar and Restaurant – catchy name – which had a sign that read something like, “Probably the best Swedish food in Beijing.” Aside from IKEA, I think it was the *only* Swedish food in town.

seriously, what’s with this “probably” business. Let’s Burger also claims it has “probably the best burger in Beijing”, why not be more self confident?!?

And of course Shanghai gets all the annoying expats as it is such a horrible, annoying city…

And that restaurant near the silk market and next to Mexican Wave (I forget its name…”Marine” something… it’s been here for at least ten years)…would change its tagline from:

“Probably the best steak in town”

to…

“Fuck it, it’s simply the best fucking steak in town! Don’t mess with the best, byyoootch!”
