A Somewhat Young China Hand on the Local Drinking Scene

Name That Beer Contest: Win a dozen pints, RMB400 of food at Saddle

Dead Ren Ale?

Dead Ren Ale?

Ever wanted to create your own beer but were too lazy (or drunk) to do anything more than come up with a name?

Then this contest is for you.

Leave a comment with your name for a Beijing- or China-themed beer and you’ll be entered into a draw for 12 pints of home brew and RMB400 of food at The Saddle Cantina.

Even better, Saddle will name its next batch in honor of you.

  • Black Lung Lager, in honor of the city’s air quality?
  • Beijing 1.2, a low-alcohol brew that serves as a tribute to the city’s taxis?
  • Den Ren Ale, a take off on the Dead Guy Ale seen all over Beijing?

That’s all there is to it. Remember, names should have something to do with Beijing or China, and should be in good, uh, taste. The deadline is Friday, November 14 at 5:30 PM; winner to be announced Monday, November 17.

By the way, look for the guys behind The Saddle Cantina to open a new burrito joint a stone’s throw away in a few weeks. Patrons will be able to choose from a handful of burrito wraps and their own fillings. More details soon.

BarrAle of a Gun Lager. – a bit retro?

Gong An Pilsner – Public harmony beer…:-)

Peking Pop – I like this one.

96% Han – & hops (yech)…a reference to the demographics of Beijing (12 million sold and counting…)

    Welcome to the Zhong Guo.
It would even have a ready-made theme song for use in adverts.

Are any two things more closely linked that beer and creativity?

@ Joe, c’mon, we have at least 15 million people!

@ biglebufski, yes, and I believe the band has a new album with “Chinese” in the title…

@ Will, can we also have an “extra bitter”?

    Cheers, Boyce

    @ Charles,

With that one, I’m not even going to enter, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Lager.

    Cheers, Boyce

Entry 1: Pishi Pijiu (pick your own “good” pi & shi characters).

Of course, on the bottle, it will be “pinyinized” with the removal of the ultimate vowel (conforming to the current “DYI Romanization” branding fad) as follows:

    Pish Beer

Entry 2: Or, in an ill-conceived cross-branding exercise, the famous “Old Special” Rip Van Winkle Bourbon company decides to break into the China market with a beer that they call “Old Special” Lager. This is back translated as (ready for it…):

Laote Lager (say it out loud)

    @ Shannon,

That beer is going to get shortened to “PP.” Not sure it’s the best association, no matter how you pinyin-ize it!

    @ Blake,

    The Chairman of Beers.

    @ Charles,

You can enter more than one name, but your own is only included in the draft once.

    Cheers, Boyce

    @Boyce,

That’s a feature, mate, not a bug. I knew when I clicked “submit” that four of the puns would be utterly lost on those of a non-Commonwealth English persuasion; the other two are merely obscure. And yes, there are _six_ puns. A six cack, if you will (“cack” being Commonwealth for “laugh really hard” or alternatively “crap”).

Beige Jing Ale – Beige representing the air colour in the Jing

One has to start with the banal, boring beers to get to the brilliant names….

    Panda beer – enough said
Great Wall beer – or has that been done?
Red Flag lager – doesn’t raise my interest though
    小便 – go figure

    But my vote is for:
Red Lantern Beer – as in Raise the Red Lantern. Great for marketing.

    or

Revolution Bitter. Can’t you see all those revolutionary posters of the peasants striking their arms into the air, but air brush a bottle of this into their hands.

    Qianlong Imperial Stout

…and I’m surprised nobody has made reference to the Yellow River…hehehe, pre-school humor!

  28. xy November 13th, 2008 8:26 pm

if you do choose “black lung”, it should be a stout. if not, it should at least be a dark lager like a schwarzbier or dunkel. i suppose “black lung lager” has the alliteration thing working for it…
