I think the worries of an onslaught of customers is a big concern when it comes to free tastings, those Top Cellar regularly holds them and Carrefour does it twice annually (thought those tend to be lower-range wines). Meantime, I can live with paying USD10-15 to try 100+ wines...

In New York it seems that almost every day of the week you can find a shop that holds free tastings, and the wines tend to be good middle-range selections. Though I understand it is to prevent hoards from just getting free samples without any inclination to buy, which seems to be more of a problem here than in the West.</description>
