Scoop: Beijing to have ‘Olympic Bar Street’?
Last week, I got the scoop on bar icon Bruce Li moving from Centro to Aria. I also got the scoop on nhu officially closing for remodeling.
This week, I have something even better: rumor has it that Beijing will have an Olympic Bar Street near the main stadium. Actually, it’s more like a quintet of bar streets since five somewhat semi-circular paths are to converge on a central area. The whole thing will look a lot like the Olympic rings, get it?
The central area is to feature “Chinese bars,” although this is still in the conceptual stage - one can only imagine karaoke, baijiu and Qingdao beer. The best part is that just as each Olympic ring represents a continent, so, too, will each bar street. I guess that means honky tonk bars and martini lounges on the North American street, wine bars and beer pubs on the European one, etc.
In any case, he says the street(s) is (are) to open in early 2008 to ensure staff can learn to serve Absinthe and Akvavit, Mezcal and Moonshine, Soju and Sambuca, and lots of other grog well ahead of the games.
The Five Friendlies are somehow tied into all this, and I’d provide more details on that, but… this… is… only… my… pathetic… attempt… at… an… April… Fool’s… joke.
And yes, I know, I’m a day late…
